The use of multimeters still accounts for a large number of injuries among our “qualified” workers, yet many companies continue to assume their maintenance and electrical workers have been properly trained. When electrical testing mistakes are made the outcome can be catastrophic to the workers and the company.

OSHA and NIOSH estimate there are as many as 10 arc blast incidents every day in the US. Many of these are caused by the improper use or maintenance of electrical testing devices.

NIOSH studies have found that 24% of electrical accidents are caused by troubleshooting, voltage testing and like activities. We have a tendency to ignore hazards associated with tasks we consider "safe".

Section 110.6(D)(1)(e) of NFPA 70E requires employees to demonstrate the ability to use voltage-detectors. This requires specific training in voltage detection equipment selection and use. Testing for the absence of voltage is an essential part of establishing an electrically safe work condition.
